The lab
What’s on the bench.
GRL is an independent R&D lab exploring better ways for people, software, intelligent systems and machines to work together. Some of what we build solves problems today. Some of it explores what may be possible tomorrow.
What we’re working on
Four directions, described from a distance and labeled with where each one really is. All of it is in progress. None of it is a finished product.
Status: Active research
A.N.T.O.N.
Our research and engineering companion. Anton helps GRL investigate problems, organize knowledge, explore solutions, and experiment with new ways of getting things done.
He's a work in progress, and he'll stay one for a while. People at GRL make the decisions.
Status: Early design
A companion robot design study
A small physical robot, on paper and on screen. We're working out what a helpful machine that shares a room with people should look like, and how it should behave.
It's at the early design stage. Nothing has been built for sale, and there's nothing to order.
Status: In development
Tools and apps
Some of what we build is for ourselves, because we get annoyed by slow, repetitive work too. Some of it is for other people.
When a tool we made for our own bench turns out to be useful elsewhere, it gets tidied up and put to work.
Status: Not ready to share
Things we're not ready to talk about yet
Every lab has a shelf like this. Some of it will turn into something. Some of it will turn into a lesson.
We'd rather say nothing than oversell an idea that isn't ready. When one is, it gets a page of its own.
Why a lab fixes invoices
The two sides help each other.
Problems today
One side of GRL is practical work: the repetitive task, the spreadsheet nobody likes, the two programs that won’t talk. Real problems keep the research honest. An idea that can’t help with a Friday invoice pile isn’t much of an idea.
Questions for tomorrow
The other side is slower questions about how people and machines might work together better. We don’t publish claims we can’t back up, so you won’t find results, benchmarks or big promises on this page. You’ll find them when they exist.
Back to today’s problems.
Got something slow, repetitive or just plain annoying? That’s the day job.
